Australia’s innings: Wade’s blitz takes them to 90/5

After winning the toss and opting to bowl first, India got off to a great start as Jasprit Bumrah removed Aaron Finch for 12 in the second over. Finch had hit two fours and a six in his nine-ball cameo, but was caught by Shreyas Iyer at deep midwicket.

Australia then lost three more wickets in quick succession, as Axar Patel ran through their middle order. He dismissed Steve Smith for 4, Glenn Maxwell for 6 and Mitchell Marsh for 1, leaving Australia reeling at 38/4 in the fifth over. Matthew Wade, who was leading the side in the absence of the injured David Warner, then took charge and launched a counter-attack.

He smashed four fours and three sixes in his 20-ball 43, and added 52 runs for the fifth wicket with Daniel Sams, who made 16 off 10 balls. Australia finished their innings at 90/5, setting India a challenging target of 91 in eight overs.

India’s innings: Rohit’s masterclass seals the chase

India began their chase in a blistering fashion, as Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul added 20 runs in the first over bowled by Josh Hazlewood. Rahul was the first to depart, caught by Wade off Sean Abbott for 30 off 22 balls. He hit three fours and a six in his innings, and put on 57 runs for the opening wicket with Rohit. Virat Kohli, who came in at number three, looked in good touch as he hit four fours and a six in his 24-ball 40.

He added 28 runs for the second wicket with Rohit, before falling to Adam Zampa in the seventh over. Zampa then struck twice in two balls, dismissing Suryakumar Yadav and Sanju Samson for 15 and 10 respectively. India needed 14 runs off the last over, and Hardik Pandya delivered with two sixes off Abbott to seal the win. Rohit remained unbeaten on 46 off 28 balls, hitting five fours and two sixes. He was adjudged the player of the match for his match-winning knock.
